What are Field Types?

This is an informational page breaking down the different Field Types

 

 

Within a CityGro contact record, field types affect how data is shown to you and how that data is treated or manipulated.

 

What they are:

  • If fields are where data is stored, then field types could be considered how, or in what format data is stored.
    • If you're familiar with a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel or Numbers, you'll know about number formats. Depending on the format you select, a number might be formatted as plain text, a percentage, a date, currency, or several others. The way it's formatted will also affect what you can do with it, or how it's treated by other functions.

 

The table below will help better explain each type of Field Type:

Text

 Names, email addresses, physical addresses, notes, phone number, general data point (any data point you would ask a contact, i.e. favorite color, size, etc) Cannot use "less than" or "greater than" filters, or other numerical limitations. Can give options in the drop-down menu or select menu
Number Numerical data only. ZIP codes, values, sequences Will not accept text, limited to 8 characters.  
Punchcard The numerical value will go up and down based on points awarded and offers redeemed. If you have multiple, you have to specify which punchcard applies to which offer and which punchcard points get awarded. Most accounts won't ever want to create additional punchcards.
Date Birth dates, visit dates, anniversaries, appointments Can be input in different formats, but is stored YYYY-MM-DD. Can set date as only month/day or month/day/year.
Timestamp Tracking the exact date and time an event occurs. Needs to be tied to an event or automation. When filtering off of a time-stamp, you must always have a "greater than" or "less than" to get proper results.

Checkbox (yes/no/
empty)

 Opt-ins, documents signed, yes/no conditions Binary — either the box is checked or it's not. Filters: if looking for "is not yes", use that as the filter. Empty is not the same as no.
Image Storing a picture of something Upload sizes are limited, taking a picture will render storable size  
Password Encrypted string not visible to anyone beyond seeing there is a value. Always uses the same number of ******** Only used for contact portal or API  
Object Used when you have multiple values to be entered and grouped together in one field. This could be used for adding multiple children, appointment notes, or incidents to a data field. Filtering is more limited in these data fields, and you must remember to select "Allow multiple values to be stored in this field" when creating a field of this type.
